"The Rose in the Dust" The fighting in the circus following the killing of the lion tamer by one of her beasts is continued as this chapter resumes the story and all the principles are seen to escape, the diamond being carried by its finder to a lonely barn, where it is hidden and later is shaken down into the manger below. Arthur Stanley attempts to learn by wire from Richmond, Va., whether Esther is in Los Angeles. When the telegram in reply is seen by Blair he later changes its meaning so that Arthur is still convinced he is mistaken in thinking he saw Esther.
