Society girl Eva Ricardo is sent to a seaside New England village to live with her maiden aunt by her father who has lost all his money in speculation. There she falls in love with author Paul Armitage after being attracted to, and then repulsed by, the violent John Sheen. Sheen and his jealous sister, Mrs. Nina Carey, whose husband is in India and who loves Paul, discredit Eve in Paul's eyes and succeed in breaking up the romance. During a party, Sheen trails Eve and Paul's brother George to an old house said to be haunted and fights with George. After Paul enters and is hit by Sheen's bullet meant for George, Sheen kills himself, Nina confesses her treachery, and Paul, recovered, is reunited with Eve. -AFI
