Story Summary:

Near the completion of his prison sentence, pickpocket Bob Stephany, alias "The Twinkler," saves the life of Old Doc, the prison trusty in charge of Sing Sing's dynamo room. Bob's fiancée is Rose Burke, known as "The Rose," whose father is also a criminal. Rose's dream is that Bob will reform, so that they can live a normal life together. Bob is finally released, and tries to go straight, but a crooked detective blackmails him. When Boss Corregan, a gangster, makes improper advances toward Rose, her father shoots him through a window and disappears. Rose faints and is prosecuted for the murder. The detective gets Bob briefly imprisoned again on a false charge, and upon his release, Bob learns that Rose is to be executed. Daddy Burke, himself imprisoned elsewhere and late in hearing about her daughter's impending electrocution, signs a murder confession which Bob takes to the governor, who in turn gives his secretary the task of taking Rose's pardon by train to the prison. Bob also boards the same train without realizing the secretary is aboard, and when he impulsively steals the man's wallet he is shocked to find the paper that will save Rose's life. When a storm cuts off all communication, Bob despairs of getting news to the warden in time, but at the prison, Old Doc, to repay Bob for saving his life, creates a dynamo malfunction that prevents the electric work from working, and Rose's life is spared long enough for the pardon to arrive. Changed by the experience, Bob reforms for good.”- Motography, December 2nd, 1916
