Story Summary:
Years after starting a job for fifteen dollars a week, John Slocum has worked his way down to eight, and so Henry, his ambitious uncle, decides to arrange a marriage between John and Bess, a childhood sweetheart who has since become a movie star. John is in love with Mary, however, while Bess's interests include only high-powered businessmen. Then, in a lottery, Mary wins a sable coat, which she gives to John. The clothing makes the man, as John begins to act like those who routinely wear furs, after which, following a tip from a wealthy friend, he makes a fortune in the stock market. Suddenly, Bess becomes interested in John and does her best to make him fall in love with her. John almost succumbs, but he finally realizes the falseness of his new, high-class acquaintances as well as the real motive for Bess's devotion, and so he marries Mary as quickly as possible. -AFI
