Story Summary:
While Cleo is waiting for the happy day which will unite her to Lieutenant Hope, the latter receives a letter from Inez Machlin, begging him to marry her to protect her honor, because she had been forced to spend a night in a cabin with him when lost in the woods some months before. Hope seeks an audience with Cleo at once and, disclosing the contents of the letter, relates the circumstances in which he was altogether blameless. Cleo agrees with him that the honorable course is for him to give up Cleo and marry Inez. Immediately thereafter, Hope is summoned to Washington and departs. Hook grows dramatic when informed by Cleo of the termination of her engagement to Hope and threatens to force Hope to answer. Cleo convinces him that Hope is not to blame and Hook finds cheaper quarters for Cleo, as economy must be practiced now. On arrival in Washington, Hope learns that he has been left a fortune by the late Mark Edmond, whose life he has saved on a railroad trestle. He later visits Inez, and making her clearly understand that his heart is given to another, but he agrees to marry her to save her reputation. In the meantime, while Hope is in Washington, Cleo and Hook undergo all the privations of poverty. Cleo cannot find work because of her inexperience, and Hook is handicapped by his crippled hand. One by one Hook parts with his few keepsakes to raise money. At the same time he prevents Cleo from pawning anything of hers by insistently maintaining his ability to get along. Mahlin and Morton and Olga and Satsuma are still making desperate efforts to locate the missing book. The cowboys give a dance where Olga and Morton are still staying and while the festivities are in progress, bandits attack the party. Morton and Olga attempt to escape, but just as they think they are safe, the bandits swoop down and capture them. They are tied on the backs of horses and carried off to the bandits' den in the mountains. - Moving Picture World, August 12, 1916
