Story Summary: Laura (Vivian Rich) is a shepherdess of the hills who works for the family of Randall Wellington (Alfred Vosburgh) who has been abroad for many years and “secretly married a countess” (Geneaux.) Randall is attracted to Laura and makes his move when he mistakenly thinks his wife was lost at sea. They then romance and marry, only to find that wife#1 (Isobel, the Countess) had missed the sailing and therefore is very much alive which makes Randall a bigamist. Laura is crushed and leaves the estate but also could be pregnant. Laura has the baby and leaves it with the church. She then goes to work at a laundry. Laura’s mother goes rather wacky with grief, wandering the hills. Years pass with Laura still at the laundry but now more of a manager and her boy has since been adopted – by Mrs. Wellington (Louise Lester.) The countess has also conveniently died “after a long illness.” Finally, all works out. “The peace of the present softens the bitterness of the past.” - Dana Driskel |
