Story Summary:
To avenge her dismissal, a nurse kidnaps the baby daughter of Judge and Mrs. De Voe and takes the child to the Kentucky mountain home of her friend, Martha Fagan. The nurse dies before she can reveal the baby's identity, and Martha, who has just lost her own infant, accepts the girl as a divine gift, telling no one of the event. As April matures, she exhibits a gentleness and refinement that alienates her brutal father Tim but endears her to the learned Doc Jenkins. April falls in love with visiting poet Jerry Gordon, and when the latter learns that Tim plans to sell her to the uncouth Casper, he marries her himself. Upon learning that Jerry's friends, the De Voes, consider her the poet's inferior, April attempts suicide, but Doc Jenkins, who has discovered her identity, rescues her. Recognizing April's baby clothes, the De Voes are reunited with their daughter, while Jerry reassures her of his love.
