Story Summary:
In order to repay gambling debts, Oliver Bailey, a substitute for star player Foster Calhoun on the Newbridge College Football team, decides to throw the big game. Learning that Foster has an inherited weakness for alcohol, Oliver tricks him into drinking too much. Foster is unable to play and so, taking his place, Oliver is responsible for the team's loss. Newbridge expels Foster, and he loses his sweetheart Margaret because of his drunkenness. Soon a hopeless alcoholic, Foster goes West, where Roby, a dance hall girl, tricks him into marrying her. Foster then learns that his uncle has died, leaving him all his money. Determined to start over, he cures himself of his addiction and then finds out that he has been forgiven at Newbridge and that Oliver's dishonesty has been discovered. He also learns that he and Roby had been married illegally and so, when he goes East to claim his fortune, he is reconciled with Margaret, and the couple plans their marriage. -AFI
