Story Summary:
Ruined in the stock market, Kelso Hamilton is unable to marry his sweetheart Angela Earle, much to the delight of villainous George Carewe, secretary to Angela's father, clandestine lover to the Earle's maid Jessie, and a hopeful for Angela's hand. Tom Cook, Jessie's father and a gardener for the Earles, learns that his daughter is being deceived and goes to confront Carewe but ends up in a struggle with Carewe's valet. Thinking he has killed the valet, Tom flees for the West, stopping long enough to see Carewe plant extra cards in Hamilton's pocket during a card game at the Earles. Disgraced in the eyes of everyone but Angela after the cards are discovered, Hamilton also heads West to regain his fortune, joining forces with Tom during a robbery on the train they are both riding. Hamilton starts a ranch in the Santa Ynez mountains near a copper mine owned by the Earles, where the manager is inciting the workers to violence as part of a conspiracy with Carewe to take over the mine. When the Earles and Carewe travel West to investigate, they are attacked by the workers but rescued by the intervention of Hamilton. Learning that the man he quarrelled with is alive, Tom clears Hamilton's name, clearing the way for Hamilton to marry Angela. -AFI
